KFC adds new fried chicken

LOUISVILLE Ky. KFC is updating its menu again with the limited-time promotion of a new, chipotle-flavored fried chicken, Smoky Chipotle Crispy.

Like the chain’s Original Recipe signature, the new fried chicken is made with a “secret recipe,” said Doug Hasselo, chief food innovation officer for the Yum! Brands-owned concept. The key flavoring ingredient, he said, are “slow-smoked chipotle peppers.” Chipotles are roasted jalapeno peppers.

KFC said the new product has been under development for 20 years. Its introduction follows the unveiling earlier this year of a new “grilled” chicken, a grill-marked roasted chicken that is still in extensive tests. As part of the rollout, which is planned for the coming year, KFC said it would allow units to change their names to Kentucky Fried & Grilled Chicken.

In announcing the limited-time offer of Smoky Chipotle Crispy Chicken, KFC did not say what equipment would be used to prepare the new item, or how it would be advertised and marketed. The chicken will be offered both in buckets and as part of a plated meal, the chain said. A two-piece meal sells for $3.29, according to KFC’s website.
