Red Robin's profit jumps 59.4%

GREENWOOD VILLAGE Colo. Red Robin Gourmet Burgers Inc., operator or franchisor of 347 casual-dining restaurants, recorded a 59.4-percent, year-over-year gain in fourth-quarter profit on an extra operating week that helped boost revenues 40.6 percent to $163.8 million. The company earned $8.8 million, or 53 cents per share, for the 13 weeks ended Dec. 31.

Same-store sales increased 0.2 percent at corporate restaurants, driven by a 3.2-percent increase in the average guest check that offset a 3-percent drop in traffic, the company reported. Same-store sales at franchised units in the United States and Canada increased 1.5 percent and 5.1 percent, respectively.

For the year, profit rose to $29.4 million, or $1.75 per share, from $27.4 million, or $1.64 per share, a year earlier. Revenues jumped 27 percent to $618.7 million.
