How restaurant technology is changing customer service forever

QR codes, food lockers and automation are forcing operators to redeploy employees to new roles that are part IT troubleshooting and part hospitality

As restaurant “help wanted” ads reach a fever pitch during the industry’s current labor crisis, an early draft of the 2022 restaurant model might look like an oversized vending machine with robots in the back and food pickup slots out front. But even though automation technology is on the rise alongside ballooning industry turnover rates, restaurants are not giving up on customer service: They’re just changing the job description.
