The Next Gen: Duffy's Sports Grill

Next Gen brands are on the rise and on the cusp of breaking into the Top 200

This is part of the Nation’s Restaurant News annual Top 200 report, a proprietary ranking of the foodservice industry’s largest restaurant chains and parent companies.

What is it? “We want to be seen as a restaurant that features sports ... with a focus on food that is chef driven ... and known for value,” said Jason Emmett, president of Duffy’s Sports Grill-parent Duffy’s Management Inc. That thinking has netted Duffy’s such un-sports-bar-like foods as sesame-crusted and seared ahi tuna with soba noodles, fresh mussels marinara and lobster tacos, as well as an all-day, everyday “2 for 1” price policy for nearly all alcoholic beverages.

Growth drivers: Emmett said Duffy’s “MVP Card” loyalty program, with about 600,000 members, helps build sales. The chain’s practice of opening in converted restaurant spaces that meet specific location, physical plant, HVAC and other proprietary requirements permits it to expand faster and for less than if it relied on new construction, he added.

Price point: From $4.99 for a cup of soup to $19.99 for a rack of ribs or steak; all-day per-person average is about $20, with lunch and dinner averages of $17 and $23, respectively.

Headquarters: Lake Worth, Fla.

The figures shown in the graphic above reflect Top 200 data for the Latest Year, with a fiscal year-end of December 2017.
