Way back in 2017, an Australian millionaire suggested that young adults, specifically millennials, tend to spend money on immediate pleasures such as avocado toast instead of building long-term wealth through real estate or savings.
Despite the virality of the dish’s negative connotation, new generations have kept on indulging, as restaurant operators have continued to innovate the simple combination of bread and fruit (it’s actually a berry!) to new heights.
On top of that, avocado toast is a great source of plant-based protein, and as more consumers lean toward plant-focused diets, they’re certainly not swearing off this now-ubiquitous dish.
Market research firm Datassential reports that avocado toast has increased 185% on U.S. menus over the past four years.
