Papa Murphy's: Focusing on freshness

Here’s the thing about most large pizza chains: Unless a person lives upstairs from a location or eats in parking lot, there is almost always considerable elapsed time between when a pizza is done and when it’s eaten. That time can be critical when considering a chain’s quality.

That’s not a problem for Papa Murphy’s Holdings Inc., and as a result the Vancouver, Wash.-based chain is routinely featured atop customer rankings of pizza chains — including this year’s Consumer Picks.

Weldon Spangler, in fact, said he was a loyal customer long before he was named CEO earlier this year.

“In Seattle and later in Portland, my family and I were big fans of the brand and were loyal customers,” he said on the company’s most recent earnings call. “This is a great concept with great food.”

As a take-and-bake pizza chain, Papa Murphy’s can provide customers with customized pizzas they make at home, and so they get their pizzas fresh out of the oven — rather than from a delivery driver’s warmer or a car’s passenger seat 20 minutes later.

“It’s the freshest,” Spangler said, “because it comes right out of the oven.”
