Dunkin’ new breakfast salvo: Dash of maple

CANTON Mass. Dunkin’ Donuts, the 7,200-unit coffee-and-baked-goods chain, augmented its popular breakfast sandwich line with the launch of the Maple Cheddar Sandwich. The sandwich, which will be available systemwide through March 11 at a suggested retail price of $2.99, combines scrambled egg with a maple-flavored sausage patty topped with melted white cheddar cheese and served on a freshly baked croissant.

The sandwich is available throughout the day.

Chainwide sales of breakfast sandwiches rose more than 10 percent during 2006, the company said.

Among the products touted by McDonald's as a factor in its turnaround is the Sausage, Egg & Cheese McGriddle, which is made with two maple-flavored griddle cakes.

Many of the major quick-service chains have been overhauling their breakfast menus as competition within that early part of the day has intensified. One of the more significant introductions will come next month when Burger King rolls out a menu of 10 items priced at $1 or less on Feb. 19.

Dunkin' Donuts is a division of Dunkin' Brands Inc., which also owns the Baskin-Robbins and Togo's chains. It currently is looking to sell TogoÕs.
