NEW YORK Bon Appetit magazine will showcase the cooking of celebrity chefs from around the country in what is being touted as one of New York City’s first “pop-up” restaurants.
Called the Bon Appetit Supper Club and Cafe, the short-lived eatery will be open for two weeks, from Oct. 25 through Nov. 3., and occupy the former site of the Hard Rock Cafe on West 57 Street in Manhattan.
During the day, the space will house a casual cafe that will be open to the general public and feature signature dishes of the various chefs. Entrees will be priced at $10 and desserts will run $1 each. The cafe also will feature live cooking demonstrations, tastings and book signings.
In the evening, the chefs will serve dinner to about 100 invited guests.
The lineup of chefs includes restaurateur and TV chef Emeril Lagasse; Cat Cora of Iron Chef America; Govind Armstrong of Table 8 in Los Angeles; Michel Richard of Citronelle in Washington, D.C.; Will Goldfarb of Picnick in New York; Michael Mina of Michael Mina in San Francisco; and Claudia Fleming of North Fork Table and Inn in Long Island, N.Y.
Aportion of the sales will be donated to Chefs for Humanity, an alliance of culinary professionals and educators that helps provide nutrition education, hunger relief and humanitarian aid.
The space will be repurposed at the end of the two weeks.
The Supper Club is believed to be the second pop-up restaurant to open in the city. Sky360, a lounge featuring cocktails and in-flight meals prepared for Delta Airlines from the recipes of celebrity chefs Todd English and Michelle Bernstein, also is in midtown Manhattan. It is scheduled to remain open until mid-November.
Pop-up facilities -- so called because of their limited time span -- have been used by retailers for seasonal events or as a way of exploiting a limited-time opportunity, like a vacant urban plot.
