SACRAMENTO Calif. A proposal to phase out the use of artificial trans fats in foodservice facilities across California was narrowly defeated this week by the state legislature, which is scheduled to conclude its current session on Friday. But Assemblyman Tony Mendoza is likely to resurrect the measure when lawmakers reconvene in January, according to his support staff.
The 2007 bill passed the Assembly in June, but was defeated Wednesday in the Senate by a vote of 22-18. .
Under a separate menu-labeling bill that passed both houses this week and awaits action by the governor, restaurants would be required to post information about trans fat content, among other nutritional data. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has not indicated his plans for the legislation.
