Dunkin’ Donuts to enter Mexico

Existing franchisee’s subsidiary signs deal for 100 units

Dunkin' Brands Group Inc. has signed a franchise agreement with a subsidiary of existing franchisee Sizzling Platter LLC to develop the Dunkin’ Donuts brand throughout Mexico, the company said Monday.

Canton, Mass.-based Dunkin’ said the agreement with Murray, Utah-based Sizzling Platter calls for more than 100 Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants in the Distrito Federal, which includes the capital Mexico City, as well as the states of Hidalgo, Jalisco, México, Morelos and Querétaro.

“There’s a significant demand for what Dunkin’ Donuts offers — high-quality food and beverages served fast and at a great value — in Mexico,” said Paul Twohig, president of Dunkin’ Donuts U.S. and Canada, and Dunkin’ Donuts & Baskin-Robbins Europe and Latin America.

“We’re very pleased to be entering Mexico with the experienced leaders at Sizzling Platter,” Twohig said, adding that Sizzling has a strong track record in quick-service restaurants.

Sizzling Platter operates a number of franchise brands in the West, as well as Mexico and China. Domestically, it franchises the Dunkin’ Donuts, Little Caesars, Red Robin Gourmet Burgers and Sizzler Family Steakhouse brands. Internationally, the company operates Little Caesars in Mexico and Dunkin’ Donuts through a joint venture in Shanghai, China.

Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants in Mexico will offer the brand’s hot and iced coffees and other drinks, as well as bagels, muffins, croissants, donuts and sandwiches, the company said. “The brand will also offer regional menu items to cater to local tastes,” Dunkin said in a press release.

Mitch Lowe, general counsel and vice president of development for Sizzling Platter, said in a statement: “We’re very passionate about Dunkin’ Donuts’ unique value proposition, and feel it will resonate well with guests across Mexico.”

Dunkin’ said it will continue to recruit multiunit franchisee candidates for other regions of Mexico.

Dunkin’ Donuts has more than 11,000 restaurants in 33 countries, more than 7,900 of which are in the United States.
