McDonald's says the old and the new combined for a 3.5% comp rise in April

OAK BROOK Ill. McDonald's Corp. credited its breakfast menu, Happy Meals and Snack Wrap for a 3.5 percent rise in domestic same-store sales during April, which also brought a 4.2 percent increase in U.S. systemwide sales.

Global comparable sales rose 4.8 percent during the month, and worldwide sales jumped 9.6 percent, the company said.

Robust sales in France and Russia contributed to a 3.5 percent rise in comparable sales within the quick-service giant's European division, according to results released this morning. The highest same-store sales measurement of 10.3 percent occurred in the Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa divisions, led by Japan and China. Jim Skinner, chief executive, credited extended hours, breakfast and locally relevant menu offerings for the division's strong performance.

April's systemwide sales rose 9.6 percent worldwide and 4.2 percent in the U.S. McDonald's, which operates or franchises more than 30,000 restaurants in 100 countries, expects to release May sales on June 8.
