Conn. said to be asking for Aramark probe

NEW HAVEN Conn. Connecticut’s attorney general has asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture to investigate whether contracting giant Aramark Corp. has withheld rebates and discounts it may have received on food purchases for clients’ foodservice operations, according to a report in the New Haven Register.

The Register said Attorney General Richard Blumenthal notified the federal government because Aramark operates in states other than Connecticut. The contractor currently is the subject of an investigation by the federal Government Accountability Office, which is examining the finances and oversight of foodservice management companies. The GAO expects to present its findings to Congress on Sept. 30.

Aramark did not respond to requests for comment by the time this story was posted.

Aramark lost its contract earlier this year to manage the foodservices of New Haven's public school system. The loss followed a prolonged dispute with two service-employees’ unions, Unite Here and SEIU. Both organizations alleged that Aramark withheld $1.3 million in rebates connected to the 2004-05 school year.
