A McDonald’s Stroopwafel McFlurry for 20 pence?

For a limited time, burger chain will accept any foreign currency for new global menu items

McDonald’s Corp. on Wednesday will unveil a global menu of “Worldwide Favorites” to restaurants nationwide. But if you’re short on cash, McDonald’s is allowing customers to pay for any of the international foods using foreign currency.

That means if you have any Euros or British pound coins from your international travels, McDonald’s restaurants will accept those currencies in exchange for one of the four global items. So, a spare 20-pence British coin could get you a free Grand Extreme Bacon Burger, which sells in the U.S. for $5.59.  Its British pound value is $4.43.

The foreign currency promotion is valid between 2-5 p.m. Thursday, June 6.

The four global items include: a Stroopwafel McFlurry (vanilla soft serve mixed with caramel and chopped Dutch Daelmans Stroopwafel caramel waffle cookie pieces); the Grand McExtreme Bacon Burger (fresh beef burger topped with applewood-smoked bacon, smoky McBacon sauce, Gouda cheese and slivered onions); a  Tomato Mozzarella Chicken Sandwich (grilled or crispy all-white chicken with sliced Roma tomatoes, herb sauce, creamy mozzarella cheese, slivered onions and lettuce); and Cheesy Bacon Fries (McDonald’s fries topped with cheddar cheese sauce and chopped Applewood smoked bacon).

A Stroopwafel is priced at $2.19 for an 8-ounce size, and $2.89 for a 12-ounce size. The Tomato Mozzarella Chicken Sandwich is $5.59 (with crispy chicken) and $5.59 (with grilled chicken). The Cheesy Bacon Fries cost $3.19.

“This unique [global currency] event provides our customers with an international experience that only a brand with our global scale could create, all without having to hop on a plane,” said Molly McKenna, McDonald’s director of communications, in a statement.

The Chicago-based quick-service chain introduced a global menu last year at the company’s restaurant inside its new headquarters in headquarter city’s West Loop neighborhood. The menu features a rotation of foods found at McDonald’s locations around the world.

Wednesday marks the first time international foods will be offered in participating restaurants nationwide.

McDonald’s operates about 13,900 stores in the U.S.
