Wendy’s sells bakery business

Deal consistent with company’s growth, financial strategies, CEO says

The Wendy’s Co. has sold its bakery in Zanesville, Ohio, to Chicago-based East Balt Bakeries, the company said Tuesday.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The facility will continue to serve as one of Wendy’s bakery vendors. The sale came a month after the Dublin, Ohio-based quick-service operator said it planned to sell its bakery business, calling it a “non-core asset.”

By selling the bakery business, Wendy’s CEO Emil Brolick said in May that the company would have “greater sourcing flexibility” as it increases the use of artisan buns in its limited-time offers.

The sale comes as Wendy’s continues to unload assets. The company is selling 640 restaurants this year as part of a major refranchising effort.

“The sale of the New Bakery business is consistent with Wendy’s growth and financial strategies to focus resources against our core restaurant business,” Brolick said in a statement. “We believe New Bakery and its employees have the potential to thrive and grow as part of an industry-leading and dedicated bakery company like East Balt. We thank and recognize the New Bakery team for their important contributions to the Wendy’s brand.”

East Balt has 21 bakeries in 12 countries and provides a range of products to foodservice companies.

“We are excited about the potential opportunity to further expand our U.S. bakery operations and to service a terrific global brand like Wendy’s,” East Balt CEO Mark Bendix said in a statement. “We look forward to continuing to work with the Wendy’s and New Bakery leadership teams to fully transition the business in the coming weeks.”
