Yum’s China business returns to growth

All company concepts report same-store sales growth in the first quarter

Yum! Brands Inc. said on Wednesday that its profits increased in the first quarter ended March 19 as operating profit at its key China unit surged 35 percent, and all three of its brands reported same-store sales growth.

Net income for the quarter increased 8 percent, to $391 million, or 94 cents per share, from $362 million, or 83 cents per share, in the same period a year ago. Revenue at the Louisville, Ky.-based quick-service operator was flat, at $2.6 billion.
