Firehouse Subs removes trans fat from menu

JACKSONVILLE Fla. Firehouse Subs, the 289-unit sandwich chain founded by two former firefighters, said it has deleted all artificial trans fats from its menu.

Don Fox, chief operating officer of the chain, said the move was the “responsible choice.”

He said that all Firehouse sandwiches and salads have always had zero grams of  trans fats and that only desserts required a change in formulation.

Firehouse said it also offers nine medium sandwiches that contain fewer than 450 calories, and six with 10 grams of fat or less when served without mayonnaise or cheese.

Firehouse Subs, based here, was founded by brothers Robin and Chris Sorensen in the early 1990s. The company said its 2007 expansion has focused on the northeast, central and southwest regions of the country, with plans to open 100 restaurants over the next 18 months.
