McDonald’s shuffles global executive teams

Retirement of chief restaurant officer Doug Goare spurs leadership changes

Doug Goare, left, chief restaurant officer at McDonald’s, will retire at the end of the year after 40 years with the company.

With his retirement, effective Dec. 31, McDonald’s said it plans to realign its global executive team in three key segments in 2019. Goare also held the title of president of international lead markets.

The Chicago-based chain’s new organizational structure will be led by the following three leaders.  

The U.S. division will continue to be led by Chris Kempczinski, left, 49, president, McDonald’s USA.

International Operated Markets, which includes company-operated restaurants in countries including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Russia, Spain and the U.K., will be led by Joe Erlinger, currently president of High Growth Markets. His new title will be president of International Operated Markets.

The International Developmental Licensed Markets division will be led by Ian Borden, 50. Borden, previously president of Foundational Markets, will become president of International Developmental Licensed Markets.  

“The organization we created as we were beginning our turnaround in 2015 helped us make decisions more quickly, act with greater agility and strengthen the performance of our markets,” CEO Steve Easterbrook said in a statement. “This new organizational structure provides us the opportunity to continue building on our progress, making sure McDonald’s remains positioned to run great restaurants and better serve our customers.”

Easterbrook called Goare “an important leader” at McDonald’s.

“I have always valued his wise counsel and his passion for elevating the experience for our customers and crew. We thank Doug for his steadfast leadership and wish him all the best in his well-deserved retirement."

McDonald’s operates more than 37,000 locations in 120 markets around the world. More than 90 percent of the chain’s restaurants are run by franchisees.
