Franchisees question new Subway ‘Fresh Melts’ offering

Quick-service company says training and safety protocols are a top priority

Subway says its restaurant owners, store equipment and unit workers remain a chief concern after the brand’s franchise association alerted members about potential operational problems with the new line of “Fresh Melts” introduced last week.

“The safety of our franchisees and their restaurant employees is a top priority for us,” a spokesperson for the Milford, Conn.-based quick-service chain said.

The Fairfiled, Conn.-based North American Association of Subway Franchisees reportedly expressed concern about the new line’s safety, saying it imperiled employees handling the product and the toaster equipment used to prepare it.

However, the company said safety protocols and training were provided with the new menu introduction.

“In addition to providing extensive training materials, a standard protocol is to thoroughly test all new products and innovations and make operational and equipment adjustments as needed, ensuring that our franchisees and hard-working sandwich artists are able to safely and consistently execute a quality meal that guests expect,” a company spokesperson said.

Representatives of the franchise association had not responded to emails or phone messages as of press time.

The “Fresh Melts” line was introduced last week with three new sandwiches as well as the offer to turn any footlong sub into a melt with the addition of cheese.

The three new sandwiches include the grilled Ham & Cheese Melt, the Tuna Melt and a Steak & Cheese Melt.

“Fresh Melts are our latest menu innovation to give guests fresh, smart choices that don’t sacrifice taste or flavor,” said Paul Fabre, Subway’s senior vice president of culinary and Innovation, in a statement with the new sandwiches’ introduction last week.

“Our Melts are unique as they’re grilled, not toasted, so we’re creating the ultimate sandwich that has crunchy bread, melty cheese and your favorite ingredients for a perfect bite every time,” Fabre said.

Subway had more than 22,000 domestic units at the end of 2020. The company has more than 40,000 units in 100 countries worldwide.
