Burger King gives crispy chicken sandwich an Italian accent

Wendy’s also plans to introduce a marinara-mozzarella limited-time offering

Several quick-service burger brands are giving their chicken sandwiches an Italian accent for fall.

Burger King, the division of Toronto-based Restaurant Brands International Inc., on Monday will debut a new Italian Royal Crispy Chicken Sandwich, featuring melted mozzarella and marinara sauce.

The BK Italian Royal Crispy Chicken Sandwich will be available for a limited time starting Nov. 14 for a recommended price of $5.49.

And also next week, Dublin, Ohio-based Wendy’s is expected to debut an Italian mozzarella sandwich with both crispy chicken and beef options on a garlic knot bun.

On a third-quarter earnings call this week, Todd Penegor, Wendy’s CEO and president, said the Italian option was a continuation of the brand’s efforts to provide both value options with such promotions as the $5 Biggie Bag with higher priced specialty sandwiches, like the LTO Pretzel Bacon Pub burger.

“We plan to further build on the sales momentum with the launch of our fresh Italian mozzarella sandwiches,” Penegor said.

As of Sept. 30, Burger King had 19,401 units globally. Wendy’s had more than 7,000 restaurants worldwide.
