NYC health department shuts down Chodorow’s China Grill

NEW YORK The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene on Tuesday shut down China Grill restaurant for health code violations.

The violations were found during a mid-lunch inspection of the New York restaurant and included improperly maintained walk-in refrigerators and evidence of vermin.

Jeffrey Chodorow, principal owner of China Grill Management Co., which also operates such upscale restaurants as Asia de Cuba, Ono, Red Square, Social and Rumjungle, said the restaurant has an independent consultant firm staffed by former New York City health inspectors that checks monthly for health code compliance.

“We have never in the past failed a health inspection,” Chodorow said in a statement. “Our consultant’s most recent inspection occurred only one hour before the health department’s, and he advised us that we would also pass this inspection.”

Chodorow said the items inside the walk-in refrigerators were stored at the proper temperatures, except for “a few recently cooked items that were cooling inside.”

He also noted the restaurant was cited for having “water on the floor of the dishwashing room, condensation on the walk-in and a small number of found insects principally in nonfood production areas.”

Chodorow stressed that China Grill Management Co. takes its “health obligations very seriously and has great respect for the health inspection system. Rather than trying to make excuses or split hairs, we are going to take this opportunity to get ahead of the curve, as there is no longer any margin for error. Our commitment is always to be in the forefront of compliance, and we look forward to reopening in a couple of days.”
