Why KFC chose to add nuggets to the menu after 70 years

The chain is taking on another form of chicken

Welcome to First Bite, a Nation’s Restaurant News podcast, your daily source of news from NRN.

Today, we’re examining what it means that Kentucky Fried Chicken has finally added nuggets to its menu after almost 70 years in business.

Kentucky Fried Chicken. The name brings up images of the colonel and fried buckets of chicken in the famous red and white bucket, maybe some finger lickin’ sides too. Now customers can get chicken nuggets for the first time ever.

Well, not really the first time, since KFC has had Beyond Meat nuggets before but this is the first time actual chicken nuggets will be offered on the chain’s menu in its 69-year history with an exception in the ‘80’s.

Previous menu items have included popcorn chicken bites and “original recipe bites.” These chicken nuggets will have the famous 11 herbs and spices and are 100% white meat. NRN senior editors Joanna Fantozzi and Bret Thorn have more on this story.
