This week on Nation's Restaurant News the top story was Toast is adding a 99-cent fee to all orders over $10. According to a mockup of Toast’s interface, the .99-cent fee will not show up separately and will be instead part of a combined line called “taxes & fees” that already regularly shows up when customers place online orders. Unless consumers expand the “taxes and fees” subsection, they won’t see the new “order processing fee,” which, according to Toast, is intended to “help fund product investments” like SEO menus, customization, and chargeback coverage.
In other news, every year, Nation’s Restaurant News ranks the largest restaurant chains by domestic systemwide sales, giving a detailed look at the biggest players in the industry. This year, we once again partnered with Datassential and its Firefly platform to provide information for 500 chains.
2022’s numbers demonstrate an industry inching even closer to business as usual, stabilizing even as challenges such as inflation, a shallow labor pool and the supply chain persist. In fact, 91% of restaurant chains demonstrated growth in domestic systemwide sales last year. That includes 45 of the 50 biggest chains of all.
