Trending this week: Joe Biden calls for sweeping immigration reform

This week on, the most-read story was President Joe Biden calling for sweeping immigration reform on his first day in office. The U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021 seeks to create a path to citizenship for many undocumented workers, many of whom work in the restaurant industry. The next day, Biden issued his coronavirus response plan, including orders for national guidance on worker safety and restaurant operating regulations.

In other news, Starbucks announced that chief operating officer Rosalind Brewer will be leaving the company next month to take the role of CEO at Walgreens, where she will be the only Black woman running a Fortune 500 company.

There was a lot of menu news this week, with Chick-fil-A introducing a Grilled Spicy Chicken Deluxe Sandwich as a limited-time offer at restaurants nationwide – the chain’s first LTO entrée since the summer of 2019 – and Pizza Hut releasing Detroit-style pizza nationwide in four different varieties. NRN also featured 14 restaurant chains in the Menu Tracker roundup.

Elsewhere, outdoor dining resumed at California restaurants, senior food and beverage editor Bret Thorn spoke with Chipotle’s head of culinary Nevielle Panthaky, and we unveiled our annual Power List, featuring 50 people who represent the best in restaurant leadership.
