Coronavirus, or COVID-19, dominated the news cycle this week and its impact on restaurants and foodservice operators is beginning to show. Because of that, Nation’s Restaurant News is dedicating this week’s episode of Extra Serving to the global issue.

Independent restaurants are closing for weeks, large chains are facing the reality that hourly workers will need to be quarantined for 14 days and restaurant cleaning and safety operations need to be altered.

At Nation’s Restaurant News, the coverage has ranged from how restaurants can increase cleanliness to reporting on what chains are doing in response to the pandemic.

This week’s episode of Extra Serving is a special one. We’ve suspended our normal interviews for a week so we could give you all the information we have on the coronavirus.

I spoke with NRN editors Ron Ruggless and Nancy Luna about both the financial and worker impacts of the pandemic. We covered the stock market, paid sick leave and the largest moves from companies in the past week.

After listening to the podcast, read some of our coverage on improving restaurant safety:

Update: After recording this podcast, Chipotle announced "expanded emergency leave benefits for employees impacted by COVID-19" in a consumer e-mail.
