McDonald's tweet

McDonald’s Twitter account hacked with anti-Trump rhetoric

Quickly deleted tweet sets off social media frenzy

On Thursday morning, Ronald McDonald took a shot at the size of the president’s hands.

Welcome to 2017.

In a quickly deleted tweet, McDonald’s Corp.’s Twitter account called President Trump “a disgusting excuse of a president,” and that it would love to have former President Barack Obama back. “Also, you have tiny hands.”

The Tweet was “pinned” to the top of the account shortly after 9 a.m. ET.

It was quickly deleted, and later in the morning, McDonald’s said that its account was “compromised” and that it was investigating the incident.

Nevertheless, the 20-plus minutes the tweet was up generated a social media frenzy. After all, this is the world’s largest restaurant chain, taking a shot at the president of the United States, at a time when politics is a near obsession for many Americans.

Many noted that Robert Gibbs, McDonald’s chief communications officer, is a former White House press secretary under Obama.

Because of the current, divisive political environment, some people were thrilled.

Others … not so much.
