Podcast: Bloomin’ Brands' Liz Smith on why it’s important to fail fast

NRN launches weekly Extra Serving podcast

Welcome to the new Extra Serving podcast by Nation’s Restaurant News. The podcast will share ideas from restaurant innovators on leadership, food trends, technology and how to thrive in this tough industry that we can’t get enough of.

The first guest on the podcast is Liz Smith, executive chairman of Bloomin’ Brands. Smith is a 2019 Nation’s Restaurant News Golden Chain award winner, recognizing her decade of leadership of the portfolio casual dining company.

The annual Golden Chain Awards celebrate the best in the restaurant industry — those who are running industry-leading operations, mentoring top teams and creating opportunities for others.

In the Extra Serving podcast, Smith talks to NRN Editor-in-Chief Jenna Telesca about her leadership philosophy, her first job in the restaurant industry and why it’s important to talk candidly about failures.

“I’m a really open, honest book. When I do mentor, I talk about my failures much more than my successes,” said Smith.

“What is the point of talking about your successes? You’ve obviously had some. What’s much more informative is talking about your failures."

As part of her Golden Chain award, Smith will participate in a CEO panel and gala celebration at NRN’s MUFSO conference in Denver Oct. 14-16. Register now at
