Ralph Edward "Reg" Garner, the president of TW Garner Food Co., in Winston-Salem, N.C., died at the age of 56. Also this week, Signal Auditing, Procter & Gamble, Dade Paper, Linda Bean's Perfect Maine, Thought for Food, Lactalis Foodservice, Hatfield Quality Meats, Wells' Dairy and Marlin.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Ralph Edward "Reg" Garner, the president of TW Garner Food Co., died after a long illness. He was 56. Born in 1952, Garner held many positions in the firm built by his grandfather, father and uncles. After college he joined the company full time when he became familiar with each position. In 1994 he was elected president, which he held until his death on June 26. During that time he built the company from a small regional food manufacturing company to a national food marketing and manufacturing firm with such well-known brands as Texas Pete Sauces and Green Mountain Gringo Salsas. In 2003 TW Garner Food Co. was awarded the Mass Mutual National Family Business of the Year in the medium category. Garner was a respected figure in the community and served on the board of the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina, eventually being named to board chairman. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; three children; three grandchildren; and his mother.

ELLENVILLE, N.Y. -- Signal Auditing Inc. has appointed James Jessel as president. Jessel previously was vice president of commercial business at DIRECTV Inc., where he worked for eight years. Signal audits residential and commercial telecommunications piracy nationwide, and is specifically concerned with the identification of signal theft and identifying and documenting the extent to which telecommunications piracy is occurring. The corporation represents such telecommunications proprietors as cable television systems, satellite providers, and pay-per-view programmers.

MIAMI -- Procter & Gamble has selected DadePaper, based here, as a Pro Line Preferred Distributor in such regions as Georgia, Northern and Central Florida, Alabama and Tennessee. A team of distributor technical representatives will offer specialized services to thousands of customers in the foodservice, hospitality, health care and other institutional market segments.

PORTLAND, Maine -- Linda Bean's Perfect Maine and Thought for Food, a branding and creative boutique specializing in the food industry, have attempted to set a Guinness record by building the world's longest lobster roll. On June 7, Portland's Mayor Jill Duson and Dane Somers, the executive director of the Maine Lobster Council, were on hand to certify to certify the 61 foot 9.5 inch lobster roll. The event raised over $6,000 for the children of the Portland's West End for their summer swimming classes. Kraft Foods, whose Miracle Whip was used in the lobster roll, also presented a matching check of $3,600.

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Lactalis Foodservice, a firm specializing in country of origin cheeses and other dairy products, plans to expand its factory in Nampa, Idaho. The facility will add about 250 jobs during the 14-month construction and about 50 new full-time jobs at the plant after completion. In 2009 the plant expects to buy more than 1 billion pounds of milk that will be processed into various cheeses, chiefly mozzarella and provolone.

HATFIELD, Penn. -- Hatfield Quality Meats, the pork manufacturer based here, has named three winners in its Healthcare promotional sweepstakes. The grand-prize winner was Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington, Penn., which received over $2,500 in value-added Hatfield FoodService credits. Second place was Windham Hospital in Willimantic, Conn., which was awarded $1,500 in value-added credits, and third place was Elms of Cranbury in Cranbury, N.J., which won $750 in value-added credits.

LE MARS, Iowa -- Wells' Dairy, the family owned and managed dairy processor, has named Springfield, Mo., advertising and marketing agency Marlin as its new foodservice agency. Wells' Dairy produces Blue Bunny ice cream as well as an extensive line of ice cream novelties and frozen desserts.
