Shakey's reclaims 4 stores in Calif.

ALHAMBRA Calif. In a move aimed at symbolizing its comeback, Shakey’s USA has acquired four Big’s Pizza & More restaurants that were once Shakey’s locations about eight years ago.

Terms were not released. The Big’s locations were owned by Craig Clausen, a former Shakey’s franchisee who had converted the units to the Big’s concept in 2000. The sale of the restaurants to Shakey’s puts an end to the Big’s brand.

The 54-year-old brand launched a revitalization effort in 2006 that has included remodeling corporate restaurants, menu tweaks and new growth. This year, the company has opened a new unit in Oceanside, Calif., and Palmdale and Temecula, Calif., locations are scheduled to debut before the end of the year. A franchise unit also is expected to open in Auburn, Ala., later this year.

To boost franchise growth, Shakey’s recently appointed Robert Fix as vice president of franchise development.

The four former Big’s restaurants -- in the Southern California cities of Norwalk, Downey, Anaheim and Buena Park -- will be converted to Shakey’s by mid-2009 and bring the number of Shakey’s locations to 50.
