SFO’s foodservice workers said to threaten a strike

SAN FRANCISCO The employees of San Francisco International Airport’s 48 restaurants are threatening to walk off the job during the Christmas travel season if a new employment agreement cannot be reached with concessionaire HMSHost Corp., according to local news reports.

The two-day strike would involve about 650 foodservice workers, according to the accounts.

The stories quote a spokesman for Unite Here Local 2, the union representing the staffers, as saying the strike could begin as early as Thursday.

SFO and other airports are expected to be jammed this weekend with people traveling for Christmas. SFO alone is expected to host 1.6 million travelers between Dec. 18 and Jan. 1.

The employees have been working without a contract for more than a year, according to the news reports.
