Safeway tries a free-standing restaurant

PLEASANTON Calif. Supermarket giant Safeway Inc. has opened a stand-alone fast-casual restaurant in Redwood City, Calif., called Citrine New World Bistro.

The 5,000-square-foot restaurant is the first stand-alone restaurant for the 1,755-unit grocery chain. Spokesman Brian Dowling would not comment on the possibility of expanding the concept. In media reports, Dowling described Citrine as an opportunity to test culinary ideas.

While other grocery chains strike partnerships with restaurant operators to offer foodservice options — typically in stores — Safeway has long developed such dining services in house. Dowling said Safeway is doing a lot more with providing restaurant-quality meals at competitive prices, and, though the company does not break out foodservice sales, foodservice is a “very important part of our business.”

Citrine’s menu includes salads, soups, sandwiches, and desserts, as well as entrees such as grilled Asian pork loin for $13.99; chicken ravioli for $10.99; and Jamaican grilled shrimp for $13.99. Online ordering for take out is available, as is a kid’s menu.

The Safeway systems includes stores under other brand names, such as Von’s, Pavilions, Dominick’s, Genuardi’s, Randall’s, Tom Thumb and Carr’s.
