Cara sources software for portable-payment terminals

News

MISSISSAUGA Ontario Cara Operations Ltd., based here, Canada's largest full-service restaurant operator, with such brands as Swiss Chalet and Kelsey's, is using Pay-At-The-Table software from Micros Systems Inc. for its earlier announced deployment of wireless, handheld, customer-activated payment terminals.

"We currently employ Micros [technology] in over 425 locations and five brands in North America," Cara vice president of information technology John Thompson said. "Based on our long-term partnership with Micros and our experience with the Micros 3700 [sytstem], we are confident in Micros' ability to implement pay-at-the-table across our all of our branded restaurants and feel it provides us the opportunity to further enhance the guest experience in a new and innovative way."

Representatives of Columbia, Md.-based Micros said the Cara rollout of its software and VeriFone Holdings handheld payment terminals, the largest planned deployment of such technology in North America to date, is expected to conclude next summer. They said the deployment will help put Cara guests at ease about possible card fraud by letting them pay without ever relinquishing their credit or debit cards and added that the resulting support of debit-card transactions could help Cara lower card-processing fees.
