In-N-Out edged out Black Bear Diner, Chick-fil-A and Cheesecake Factory with a 70 percent score on service compared to their 69 percent rating.

The best in class ranking for service is not surprising. Co-founder Harry Snyder was a neat freak, and a stickler for cleanliness. He insisted on hiring customer-friendly employees and lured them by lavishing them with perks and wages higher than those of his biggest rivals.

In return, Snyder expected workers to learn the company from the ground up and meet his goals of quality, cleanliness and friendliness. Today, entry level workers often get paid above minimum wage, and store managers have been known to pull in as much as $150,000 a year.
