Silver Diner revamps menu

Casual dining chain adds more vegan, gluten-free items

Silver Diner, a casual-dining chain based in Rockville, Md., has reworked its menu, adding more vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and lower-calorie items in what chef-owner Ype Von Hengst is the 14-unit chain’s most significant menu change in ten years. 

Silver Diner won the 2013 MenuMasters award in the healthful innovations category for its kids menu.

Crispy fried Brussels sprouts

The new items are:

Avocado Toast: Avocado mix, hemp hearts, olive oil, micro greens and sourdough, $10.49, available with burrata and eggs for $15.99 during weekend brunch
Organic Chickpea Hummus: Chickpea paste with tahini, smoked paprika, olive oil, Kalamata olives and microgreens, served with naan, tomatoes and cucumbers, 8.99
Ancient Grain Shrimp Bowl:  Quinoa, farro, fresh mozzarella, roasted tomatoes, greens, Kalamata olives, watermelon radish, sunflower seeds, micro greens and pesto vinaigrette, $15.99
Meatless Miso Burger: Miso glazed Beyond Meat burger, watermelon radish, pickled ginger, arugula and wasabi sour cream, $12.99
Maltese Turkey Burger: Turkey burger with roasted tomato, goat cheese, pesto, tahini harissa, yogurt, arugula and a side pineapple citrus salad, $13.99
In-house Roasted Tomatoes: Roasted beefsteak tomatoes over brown rice, roasted corn, mushrooms, leeks, zucchini, pistachios, lemon pesto, asparagus and peach salsa, $13.99
Brussels Sprouts & Farro:  Fried Brussels sprouts over farro, leeks, tomatoes, roasted red pepper sauce and pistachios, $13.99 

Silver Diner also has introduced several new $2.99 side dishes: Southwestern quinoa, garlic spinach, roasted vegetables, edamame and brown rice.

Additionally, the chain has rolled out a line of Asian Brown Rice Bowls, for $9.99 with choice of sambal honey glazed fried chicken, grilled California sole, lamb meatballs or asparagus over brown rice with tamari soy, basil, zucchini, carrots, kale, roasted corn, scallions, radish and peach salsa.

Additionally, a new açaí banana shake is available, made with fat-free vanilla ice cream, skim milk and hemp hearts for $6.99.
