Wendy's uses its fresh-baked bread for new chicken sandwich

DUBLIN Ohio Wendy's is featuring a variation on its Spicy Chicken sandwich, made with bread baked off in units, as a limited-time offer.

Available through mid-April, the new 4-Alarm Spicy Chicken sandwich consists of a deep-fried chicken fillet topped with pepper jack cheese, chipotle sauce, jalapeno pepper slices, tomato and romaine lettuce, all served on the same bread used for Wendy's Frescata deli sandwich line. The bread is marketed as artisan because it is baked in stores from dough delivered from a commissary. The 4-Alarm sandwich is the first product outside of the Frescata line to feature the bread.

Franchisor Wendy's International said the new sandwich is slightly spicier than the regular Spicy Chicken, which remains on the menu, the company said. The chain has had a good response to the original, the company said. Arch-rival McDonald's pulled its Hot 'n' Spicy McChicken sandwich from menus last July, six months after rolling it out, and replaced it with a lower-priced item, the chicken Snack wrap.

The 4-Alarm sandwich has a suggested retail price of $3.99 a la carte or $5.69 in a combo.
