MIAMI — Blue Star Foods, which packages and sells sustainably produced crabmeat, has tapped James Beard Award-winning chefs Michael Schwartz of Michael's Genuine Food and Drink, and Michelle Bernstein of Michy's and SRA, to increase awareness of the brand. In the next few months Blue Star plans to feature Schwartz's recipes on its website along with videos of the two chefs preparing dishes.

GLENVIEW, Ill. — Kraft Foodservice presented a $20,000 culinary scholarship to Sonali Ruder, a student of the Institute of Culinary Education, for winning the 2010 Chefs of Grey Poupon Student Culinary Competition at Viking Cooking School and Culinary Shop here. Ruder won grand prize for her original recipe, pan-roasted lamb loin with celery root, apple and Dijon puree, mustard greens, Grey Poupon glazed carrots, pomegranate jus and truffle mustard mushroom crisp, and a mystery basket challenge dish she created: crab cake sandwich with black garlic aioli and avocado radish salsa.

Other winner were:

  • Joshua Ogrodowski, Johnson & Wales University, second place, $5,000 scholarship
  • Sarah Roberts, Kendall College, third place, $3,000 scholarship
  • Brooke Maynard, The Culinary Institute of America, fourth place, $2,000 scholarship

ORLANDO, Fla. — RedPrairie Corp., a productivity solutions provider, has completed the purchase of SmartTurn, an on-demand inventory and WMS provider. RedPrairie said the acquisition adds a multi-tenant software-as-a-service WMS to its productivity suite, creating the only software company with a WMS solution for distribution operations.

RICHMOND, Va. — Legacy Foodservice Alliance, a distributor procurement and marketing group based here, named Cindy Hulett director of marketing. In her new capacity, Hulett will be responsible for expanding the Legacy New Generations Marketing Program, and will work with both distributor and supplier members. Hulett has worked with All Kitchens of America, Foresight Partners, LLC and Progressive Group Alliance.

GOLDEN, Colo.— Coleman Natural Foods LLC, the organic chicken, beef and pork products company based here, has entered into an exclusive national brand program agreement with distribution giant, Sysco Corp. Coleman said an increasing number of consumers are looking for organic, sustainably raised, and antibiotic-free protein beyond the retail level.

AUSTIN, Texas — Quality Restaurant Concepts, a 56-unit Applebee's franchisee in the southeastern United States, has chosen HotSchedules Enterprise for its labor management, communication and forecasting. Before rolling HotSchedules out companywide, QRC tested it in 12 stores over a four-month period. It expects to go live by the end of June.
