Wagamama to open second U.S. outpost in August

CAMBRIDGE Mass. Wagamama, the London-based Japanese noodle chain, plans to open its second U.S. location here in Harvard Square next month. The opening follows the 79-unit chain’s debut in Boston’s Faneuil Hall earlier this year.

Like its predecessors, the Cambridge restaurant will offer Asian-inspired fare, such as teppan-fried udon noodles with chicken, chili chicken ramen, and teriyaki steak soba, a dish created for the U.S. market with grilled sliced sirloin served on soba noodles and vegetables. The 4,250-square-foot Wagamama — the name means “willful, naughty child” — will feature an open kitchen and communal seating for 130. Servers use handheld, wireless devices that allow them to transmit orders directly to the kitchen.

Wagamama said it has plans to expand across the East Coast, Acquired in 2005 by private-equity group Lion Capital for about $200 million, Wagamama currently has locations in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, Holland, Dubai, Belgium, Denmark, Turkey and New Zealand.
