Togo's to offer soup in bread bowls

WALNUT CREEK Calif. Togo’s Sandwiches is introducing sourdough bread bowls filled with soup next month, which the chain said is in response to a customer survey that indicated demand for the San Francisco-style bread.

The suggested price for the bread-bowl soup will be $4.99, said Togo's, which has more than 240 units. A 12-ounce serving of soup currently sells for $3.79.

Togo's also plans to add sourdough and whole grain rolls to the menu in the first quarter of next year, which also is in response to the customer survey.

The chain’s current roll choices for its sandwiches are white, honey whole wheat, onion herb, Parmesan herb and Dutch crunch.

The rollout of new products comes as the chain switches bread suppliers. It has ended its 30-year arrangement with Specialty Baking of San Jose, Calif., and partnered with two bakeries owned by GESD Capital to bake their bread daily -- San Diego Baking Company in Southern California and Artisan Bakery in the northern part of the state.
