Subway, NIH encourage kids to eat right

MILFORD Conn. Subway Restaurants said Monday it has partnered with the National Institutes of Health to support Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity & Nutrition, or We Can!, which is scheduled to debut March 25.

The initiative, which will kick off with a PEP, or Play more, Eat right and Push away the screen, rally at the D.C. Armory in Washington, D.C., is geared toward teaching kids ages 8 through 13 about the importance of exercise and eating healthfully. The chain plans to spread the We Can! message through a co-branded marketing campaign that features materials and resources at more than 1,000 Subway stores and on its official website.

Subway spokesman Jared Fogle, along with professional female boxer Laila Ali and Olympic soccer player Tab Ramos, will participate in the program, spreading the message of movement and weight management to youngsters and their families across the country.

“Getting kids to stay healthy and active is something I work on all year long and I am constantly on the road, going from school to school to reach out to children,” said Fogle, who dealt with weight problems for many years before losing approximately 245 pounds on a Subway-enriched diet. “My goal is to help children avoid the physical and emotional hardships I went through living with obesity.”

The Subway restaurant chain has more than 30,000 stores in 87 countries worldwide.
