Starbucks teams up with Samuelsson for pastries, coffees

News

SEATTLE Starbucks Coffee Co. has collaborated with New York chef-restaurateur Marcus Samuelsson to develop bakery items and coffee blends that are to be rolled out this fall.

The 14,000-unit coffeehouse giant also said it had secured rights to be the exclusive seller of Samuelsson's new cookbook, "Discovery of the Continent: Foods, Flavors and Inspirations from Africa." The chef, who was born in Ethiopia and raised in Sweden, is the owner of the Aquavit and Riingo restaurants in New York.

Starbucks agreed to donate $1 to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF for every copy of his book sold through Oct. 1, or a minimum donation of $50,000.

Samuelsson helped Starbucks create two fall bakery items: chocolate-cinnamon bread and caramelized apple-pecan coffeecake.
