Starbucks is ready to roll new drinks

SEATTLE Starbucks will roll out two smoothies starting July 15 in an attempt to boost afternoon traffic, according to a financial analyst who said she learned about the new products in a meeting with coffee-chain officials. Web postings indicate that the new products will be marketed as healthful choices, and will use the name Vivanno.

The analyst, Sharon Zackfia of William Blair & Co., said the drink chain will also introduce its mysterious new Italian beverage starting July 15 in units in southern California. Zackfia suggested new equipment might be needed for that product because the introduction requires a capital outlay.

The smoothies, which will be offered only in a 16-ounce serving, will include a whole blended banana, according Zackfia’s report. The Mango Orange drink, she wrote, will include Naked-brand fruit and whey protein in addition to the banana, for a total of 250 calories, 16 grams of protein and five grams of fiber. The Chocolate Banana will also include cocoa and milk, for a total of 270 calories and 21 grams of protein.

In a posting on starbucksgossip.com, a website unaffiliated with the company, two posters said the drinks will be served in a special cup designed for cold beverages. The two indicated that they work at the unit level for Starbucks.

Starbucks, which is operated, licensed and franchised by Starbucks Corp. here, has about 7,000 units in the United States.
