HOLLYWOOD Fla. The Salad Creations tossed-to-order salad chain said it has started identifying ingredients that are low in carbohydrates, sugar, sodium, fat and calories as an aid to diabetic patrons.
Salad Creations allows patrons to specify what ingredients they want in their salads by telling staffers on the other side of a counter, who mix the components while the customer watches. The ingredients are tossed, dressed and given to the patron in a fast-casual-like setting.
The ingredients now designated as “diabetes-friendly” were chosen in concert with the Diabetes Research Institute, an affiliate of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, according to the chain, which says it has about 60 locations.
“Not all people with diabetes have the benefit of discussing meal plans with a dietician,” Salad Creations founder and chief executive Jeff Levine said in a statement. “The diabetes-friendly meal just alleviates any guess work.”
A statement issued by the chain cited a potential U.S. market of 24 million diabetics and 57 more Americans with “pre-diabetes.”
The program was launched to coincide with National Diabetes Month, Salad Creations said.
