Romaine recall expanded

SALINAS Calif. Tanimura & Antle Thursday expanded its voluntary recall of romaine head lettuce with lot code 531380 from 29 states to 50 states. It said it did so in recognition of the likelihood that some of its original customers, including foodservice businesses, resold or otherwise redistributed the produce in other states.

The supplier is advising anyone holding the produce, which had a recommended shelf life that expired July 18, to discard it. The July 21 recall of 22,000 cartons of romaine was spurred by the finding of salmonella in a spot sample tested by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture. No illnesses have been linked to the romaine, Salinas-based Tanimura & Antle noted.

“We very much regret the inconvenience that the recall may have caused our consumers and customers,” said Tanimura & Antle chief executive Rick Antle. “Food safety and consumer health are our top priorities.”
