P.F. Chang’s signs development deal in Mexico

SCOTTSDALE Ariz. After last month announcing plans to develop restaurants in the Middle East, P.F. Chang’s China Bistro Inc. is now heading south of the border with a license agreement for units in Mexico.

On Monday, Chang’s announced a development and license agreement with Alsea, a Mexico City-based operator of quick-service and casual-dining restaurants, to develop 30 restaurants over the next 10 years. The first unit is to open in Mexico City during the fourth quarter of 2009. Alsea already operates such brands as Starbucks Coffee, Burger King, Chili’s Grill & Bar and California Pizza Kitchen.

Alsea plans to focus initially on Mexico City and open two restaurants in the first year of the agreement.

Chang’s launched its international push last month when it signed an agreement M.H. Alshaya to open 34 P.F. Chang's restaurants in Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Based in Scottsdale, P.F. Chang’s owns and operates nearly 190 P.F. Chang’s China Bistro casual-dining restaurants and nearly 160 Pei Wei Asian Diner fast-casual units.
