Panera posts 28% revenue gain

ST. LOUIS The opening of 39 bakery-cafes and an uptick in same-store sales contributed to a 28 percent gain in second-quarter revenues for Panera Bread Co., operator or franchisor of more than 1,030 fast-casual restaurants.

The company said revenues for the 13 weeks ended June 26 totaled $253 million, compared with the $197 million posted for the same period of fiscal 2006. The results reflect the sales of dough to franchisees.

Sales at company-run units open for at least 18 months rose year-over-year by 1.7 percent during the most recent quarter, and comps for franchised outlets grew 2.3 percent, yielding a systemwide gain of 2.1 percent. Panera indicated systemwide comps rose 2.3 percent during June.

During the quarter, the company said, 17 company-run units and 22 franchised stores were opened. Five were reportedly closed.

Panera operates and franchises fast-casual restaurants under the names Panera Bread Co. and St. Louis Bread Co. It also holds a 51-percent stake in Paradise Bakery & Café Inc., operator or franchisor of 46 bakery-cafes.

The company said it would report its second-quarter earnings after the stock markets close on July 24.
