Krispy tries a whole-wheat doughnut

WINSTON-SALEM N.C. Krispy Kreme Doughnuts has introduced the Whole Wheat Glazed doughnut that the 395-unit chain touted at its annual meeting here on Jan. 31.

Chain officials had cited the doughnut as one of the innovations they were embracing to change consumers' perception of Krispy as an indulgence brand.

"This sweet treat is an alternative for health conscious consumers with the benefits of 100-percent whole wheat and only 180 calories," Stan Parker, Krispy's senior vice president of marketing, said about the new item.

At the meeting with shareholders, Krispy executives also aired plans to promote more coffee-and-doughnut combination deals.

Krispy Kreme operates in 41 U.S. states, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, the Philippines, the Republic of South Korea and the United Kingdom.
