Chicago reconsiders foie gras ban

CHICAGO A Chicago alderman has introduced a bill to repeal the city's ban on selling foie gras. The bill was referred to committee for a hearing.

In an earlier news conference honoring the city's chefs, Mayor Richard Daley spoke out against the ban's passage, as did chef/restaurateur Rick Bayless of Frontera Grill. Bayless said the ban made the city look silly, and Daley said the city council has more important matters to focus on.

Earlier this week, a U.S. District judge dismissed a lawsuit challenging the ban filed some months ago by the Illinois Restaurant Association on behalf of a group of chefs.

Judge Blanche Manning ruled the city has a constitutional right to enact the ban. The IRA said it is considering an appeal.
