Boston’s Aujourd’hui, Great Bay to close

BOSTON Two high-end restaurants located in luxury hotels in Boston are the latest casualties of the economic crisis currently gripping the country.

The upscale Great Bay seafood restaurant at the Hotel Commonwealth and Aujourd’hui, the French fine-dining establishment at the Four Seasons hotel, Tuesday confirmed they would shut down operations May 30 and at the end of June, respectively.

Both restaurants have been mainstays since their debut: Aujourd’hui in 1985 and Great Bay in 2003. Aujourd’hui will be renamed and continue to operate as a private functions space and plans for the Great Bay space are still being determined.

Christopher Myers, who with partner Michael Schlow operated Great Bay, said the restaurant’s closing was a difficult decision resulting from the changing economic climate.

“The principals decided the best course of action was to close Great Bay rather than try to remake it into something other than what it was designed to be — the best seafood restaurant in Boston,” he said.

Hotel Commonwealth partner Terry Guiney said: “We are enormously grateful to Michael and Christopher and to the entire staff for their contributions. As Hotel Commonwealth moves on to even greater success, the legacy and impact of Great Bay will not be forgotten.”
