Editor, NRN: I just read your editorial, “A fresh start: New year gives industry a chance to clean up its image after food safety scares,” and couldn’t agree more with your thoughts. As you might expect, I have followed the recent events with more than a passing interest.
Responsibility for ensuring the safety of our food resides with all of us involved with the industry. At forums where I present topics on food safety, I remind the audience that food safety is one area in which you bet your business every day. Commodity-based trade associations should be pushing their membership to do all they can do to improve food safety. A safe food supply is possible if everyone in the industry owned the fact that they have a responsibility to the people who consume their products. Maybe everyone should picture a 6-year-old child sitting on their shoulder when they make food-safety decisions.
Again, nice job on the editorial.
