New York Times names new restaurant critic

NEW YORK The New York Times said Wednesday that culture editor Sam Sifton will take over as the newspaper's restaurant reviewer in October.

He will replace Frank Bruni, who announced in May that he would step down from the high-profile and pressure-filled post.

Sifton joined The Times in 2002 and has contributed articles on food to the newspaper's Sunday magazine. In a memo sent to the newspaper's staff, The Times' executive editor, Bill Keller, described Sifton as "a writer of discernment and wit and erudition."

Pete Wells, The Times' dining editor, answered reader questions about the new restaurant critic on the blog Diner's Journal. In addition, a photo of the new reviewer and comments about his social life, love of hip hop and food tastes -- he’s a fan of sesame noodles -- are posted on Eater.com.
