Panera Bread Co. reported on Monday that profit increased 5.1 percent in Dec. 31-ended fourth quarter, with net income rising to $54.2 million compared to $51.6 million in the prior-year period. The St. Louis, Mo.-based company, which owns and franchises 1,777 bakery-cafes, said systemwide same-store sales rose 1.1 percent during the quarter.
Panera said in its earnings press release that same-store sales at company-owned units fell about 2.2 percent in the first 48 days of the first quarter, blaming severe weather for fewer transactions.
The company opened 133 new bakery-cafes in fiscal 2013.
